Business Director


The Universal McCann media team are responsible for the planning and buying of media campaigns for our clients. The team has extensive experience across the full range of online and offline channels and after an incredibly successful 2021, we are looking to hire an experienced Business Director to support the leadership of this successful team.

As Business Director you will take responsibility for building significant revenue and profitability for media clients and achieving continued growth through organic and new business development. You will lead a team of Media Directors, Managers and Executives and oversee a client portfolio with 8-figure combined annual media billings.


  • Lead the agency’s response to media briefs, helping to evaluate responses in terms of quality and budget and benchmarking against objectives/KPIs set.
  • Oversight and ultimate responsibility for media buying strategy across all client campaigns, working with your team and external stakeholders to devise the optimal combination of channels across the full spectrum of media consumption
  • Manage the team and self to achieve goals and deliver on McCann and client KPIs
  • Manage the ongoing relationship with senior client contacts; ensure team deliver first-class media buying services
  • Lead the media strategy, buying and delivery process; support your team to build positive relationships and work closely with other departments including planning and creative
  • Manage the team to ensure full understanding of briefing process and what is required both from a client perspective and from an internal perspective
  • Demonstrate an ability to present and communicate information professionally according to your role and level
  • Role model curiosity and encourage your team to ask questions, show enthusiasm, give that little bit extra when needed without being asked
  • Be seen as a trusted expert both externally and internally, using your profile as a means of uncovering opportunities and winning new business.

Skills & Experience

  • Credibility and experience required to lead Agency and Client team
  • Demonstrable senior-level experience of working in media planning and buying across the full channel landscape
  • Ability to articulate media buying strategies with clarity, authority and gravitas
  • Significant team management experience with a leadership style that inspires and motivates others
  • Proven ability to drive existing business to maximize both account profitability and Agency revenue, whilst identifying new business opportunities
  • Numerically fluent, with demonstrable experience of managing revenue and forecasting processes
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Advanced presentation skills
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills
  • Significant team management experience with a leadership style that inspires and motivates others
  • Commercial acumen and business understanding
